Chapter 35 Summary: “New York City, June 1944”

Viv attends a party at the Morgan Library, where she networks to drum up publicity for her event. She encounters Hale and reflects on how comfortable they have become with each other. She asks him why he never returned her letters, and he responds that he was afraid of being unworthy of her love and so pushed her away. He also believed she had fallen in love with Edward. She tells him the truth about her marriage: that if Edward died unmarried, his father’s fortune would be given to charity instead of to his wife. Viv married him as a way to help support his family. Returning to the subject of Viv’s event, Hale encourages her to seek out Althea in person.

Chapter 36 Summary: “Paris, February 1937”

Hannah and Patrice spend the night together, and Hannah wonders why Deveraux didn’t get in touch. She becomes increasingly worried about Otto, who grows distant under her concern. One day they’re out together and see Deveraux. They talk briefly, but Deveraux quickly leaves with a Nazi officer.
